Embodying the Psychic Mood

Is your protagonist sitting down for a psychic reading?  What happens?  How does it feel?  How might the information be related from the facilitator to the recipient?  The easiest way is to go receive a few readings, comparing mood and style, delivery and content.

Most psychic facilitators are fairly laid-back and easy-going people.  Because they can see the big picture, life teaches them not to take things too seriously, or to get too attached.  And likely, they look just like the mainstream population.  We don’t bangle around in garish clothing and jewelry that shouts:  “Hey, look at me!  I’m a psychic.”  We try to blend in.

It’s been funny for me to watch the reactions of people when I show up to do group readings.  You can hear the whispers jumping from person to person.  “She looks so . . . average . . . like us . . .”  People worry that because I look like they do, I must know what they do, and can’t really access the information they’re eager for.  Long years of false images have perpetrated this myth, and for the most part, spiritualists who still cling to it are working it as part of the agenda, sometimes not a very ethical one.

It’s been my experience that the persons most gifted in spiritual communications and wisdom choose to live a life as commonplace as possible.  We hold regular jobs, live in regular houses, and occupy ourselves with as many of the same mundane tasks that you do.

In living life as a psychic, it doesn’t pay to attract too much attention to yourself.  It’s similar with people who perform magic, often keeping it to themselves.  Most of us place ourselves in service altruistically.  We avoid curiosity seekers, blasphemers, nay-sayers, and the like.  We just want to do our work–helping people.

And helping people sometimes involves working with both the currently-alive-and-in-physical-form people, and the currently-without-a-body population.  It could take the form of a palm-reading, a crystal energy reading, a tarot reading, casting the runes, dowsing, scrying, seance, clearing, chakra-balancing, or even exorcism.  It is the energy of understanding.  And with understanding, we can create balance.

So, when you’re writing about psychic phenomenon, and want to do it in a genuine way, reach out.  You’ll find that facilitators want to be cast in a genuine light.  They’ll want to deliver the message, through you and your protagonist, that help is out there.  And most of them will be glad to help you, the writer.

So, do your research before you pick up your quill.  Unless you’re writing high-fantasy, and can make your world anything you like, check us out.  To become more aware of your spirit’s purpose and agenda is a help to us all.
